Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE)?

PAE is a minimally invasive, image-guided procedure that treats an enlarged prostate (BPH) by blocking the blood flow that causes the prostate to grow.

How long does the procedure take?

Most PAE procedures take about 1-4 hours. You’ll be awake but relaxed under mild sedation, and most men go home the same day.

Is PAE painful?

Most men describe the procedure as virtually painless. You may feel mild discomfort in the lower abdomen for a few days afterward, but over-the-counter pain medication usually takes care of it.

Is this procedure FDA-approved?

Yes, the FDA approved PAE in 2018 for the treatment of enlarged prostates.

What is recovery like after PAE?

Recovery is quick and easy. Most men return to normal activities within a few days, with full relief typically developing over weeks to months as the prostate shrinks.

Will I need a catheter after PAE?

No. Unlike surgical procedures, PAE does not require a catheter after treatment in most cases.

How soon will I notice improvement?

Many men start to notice improvements in urinary flow and nighttime frequency within two to four weeks, with results continuing to build for several months.

How long do the results last?

Studies show that most men enjoy long-lasting relief for five years or more after PAE, often without the need for medications or repeat treatment.

Are there any sexual side effects?

No. One of the biggest advantages of PAE is that it does not affect sexual function – a common concern with surgical options.

Am I a good candidate for PAE?

Most men with moderate to severe BPH symptoms are great candidates, especially those who want to avoid surgery or have not found relief from medication. Our doctors will review your medical history and imaging to confirm that PAE is right for you.

Is Prostate Artery Embolization covered by insurance?

Yes; however, you will need to contact your insurance provider to determine what your specific plan covers. Our in-house pre-certification specialist can guide you through the preauthorization process.
